Researchers developed a Palm sized Magnetic tape that can store 330 TB data

IBM and Sony jointly developed a palm-sized magnetic cartridge that can store 330 terabytes of data.

Do you have a habit to capture all the precious moments of life but have to think twice before capturing those moments as storage of those pictures is the cause of concern for you?

Many people have to kill their desire as their hard disk is already full of millions of pictures and movies.

There is no need to worry anymore as Researchers at IBM and Sony are very close to solve this problem.

In a path breaking invention IBM and Sony jointly developed a palm-sized magnetic cartridge that can store 330 terabytes of data.

This cartridge can store 201 gigabits data per square inch. This is a ground-breaking development.

This tape can store 330 million of books. Keeping this fact in mind this is a remarkable achievement. Currently World’s largest hard drive can store only 60TB data.

Sony developed a new kind of tape using ‘sputter deposition’ technique. This new tape is named as “sputtered magnetic tape”.

This invention will solve the problem of storage. In the internet of things era data is being generated exponentially while storage technology is not growing accordingly. This is a shot in the arm for Cloud and Big data arena.

Signals from red dwarf star Ross 128 detected by Scientists

Scientists at University of Puerto Rico detected some peculiar signals from red dwarf star Ross 128 while conducting a scientific study about the radiation and magnetic environment around red dwarf stars. The signals consisted of broadband quasi-periodic non-polarized pulses with very strong dispersion-like features.

These signals were detected by Arecibo Observatory of the University on 12th May 2017 while studying red dwarf star with planets.

Still origin of the signals is doubtful and is the matter of further studies but three possible explanation is being provided regarding the origin of the source of signals.

According to Planetary Habitability Laboratory of University of Puerto Rico At Arecibo “We do not know the origin of these signals but there are three main possible explanations: they could be (1) emissions from Ross 128 similar to Type II solar flares, (2) emissions from another object in the field of view of Ross 128, or just (3) burst from a high orbit satellite since low orbit satellites are quick to move out of the field of view.”

“We believe that the signals are not local radio frequency interferences (RFI) since they are unique to Ross 128, and observations of other stars immediately before and after did not show anything similar,” says Abel Mendez, director of the Planetary Habitability Laboratory at the University of Puerto Rico.

Scientists at the PHL feels aliens can not be the cause of these signals.PHL is working with . SETI Berkeley with the Green Bank Telescope and SETI Institute’s ATA to get a final conclusion on this.

This information was provided to the Delhi high court by senior advocate Siddharth Luthra who is representing WhatsApp.
The bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal directed WhatsApp to file an affidavit regarding this.

A PIL has been filed in Delhi High Court by Karmanya Singh Sareen and Shreya Sethi against the new policy of sharing data with Facebook.
Senior advocate Pratibha Singh, who was representing petitioners Karmanya Singh Sareen and Shreya Sethi argued that the new privacy policy issued by WhatsApp clearly stated that if a user chose to opt out of the sharing of information for Facebook ads and products, the information shared via WhatsApp could “still be used for other purposes”.

WahtsApp was acquired by Facebook in February 2016 for US $ 19 billion. In August 2016 WahtsApp changed it’s privacy policy. According to new privacy policy WahtsApp will share user’s account information with Facebook, consisting of the phone number of the account owner and aggregated analytical data.

Scientists at MIT develops artificial human skin

Scientists at MIT developed an artificial skin that can temporarily protect and tighten skin, and smooth wrinkles. This “second skin” is using a silicone-based polymer and this can be applied as second skin and it is very hard to distinguish it from human skin as it is very thin and have elastic properties of the human skin.

This scientifically developed skin provides long-lasting ultraviolet protection.

Now scientists are working to develop it further so that it can be used to treat skin conditions by supplying drugs to the affected area.

According to MIT News

“It’s an invisible layer that can provide a barrier, provide cosmetic improvement, and potentially deliver a drug locally to the area that’s being treated. Those three things together could really make it ideal for use in humans,” says Daniel Anderson, an associate professor in MIT’s Department of Chemical Engineering and a member of MIT’s Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research and Institute for Medical Engineering and Science (IMES).

According to journal Nature,A Computer System built by Google defeated the European champion Fan Hui, in Ancient Chinese board game Go. This is a major breakthrough in the area of artificial intelligence (AI) research.

The Google system, named AlphaGo defeated Fan Hui in a five-game match at the Google DeepMind office in London in October.

Google is planning to put AlphaGo up against the highest-ranked Go player, South Korea’s Lee Sedol, at a match in Seoul in March.

“This is the first time that a computer program has defeated a human professional player in the full-sized game of Go, a feat previously thought to be at least a decade away.” – Nature

“If we win the match in March, then that’s sort of the equivalent of beating [Garry] Kasparov in chess,” said Demis Hassabis, cofounder of Google-owned DeepMind, during a press briefing on the research earlier this week. “Lee Sedol is the greatest player of the past decade. I think that would mean AlphaGo would be better than any human at playing Go.”

Go is a board game invented in China more than 2,500 years ago. In this game 19 horizontal and 19 vertical lines forms a grid and players place black and white stones alternately.

“Go is the most complex and beautiful game ever devised by humans,” Demis Hassabis, head of the Google team, and himself an avid Go player, said at a press briefing. By beating Fan Hui, he added, “our program achieved one of the long-standing grand challenges of AI.”

Fighting the plastic bag menace: A story of courage and action

Plastic bag menace

Recently I spent nearly six months at a small township of Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh. I was amazed to find that the use of plastic bags was totally banned there. It directed me to think about the state I belong to. Why could we not enforce such rules and punishments there? Nearly, 25 years back, while teaching at a school at Nagpur, we established a nature club – The Basilican -for to make students aware of the enviornment.

We generally take the most precious gifts of nature for granted. Do we ever think that the supply of air that we breathe, the water we use, the food we eat could get exhausted one, we go on assuming that the bounties of nature are inexhaustible. If we can sow the seed in young minds, our future generation, about the wise use of nature’s gift, there is a hope for saving our mother Earth.

Our mission started with the interaction amongst the nature clubs of different schools through competitions on debate, painting, singing, staging drama, nukkad natak

Interestingly I found a similar code while visiting the islands of Andaman, very strict rules helped the Union Territory keep the beaches very clean as we find in some of the foreign countries, a treat to the eyes.

Now, in Kolkata, I witnessed the anti- plastic bag campaign, though without any result. As a child, I used to read and hear that ‘what Bengal thinks today, the rest of the country thinks tomorrow.’ In practice, I am unable to find this to be true. The awareness program, we have started nearly 25 years back in a small city of Maharashtra is unable to set its foot among the so-called educated and civilized citizens of Kolkata. They insist the shopkeepers for plastic bags, sometimes even double- otherwise they prefer to walk out without buying from that shop or else engage themselves in unending argument.

I loved it when I visited Nicco Park and Science City, as they do not allow plastic bags in. Now, recently all the shopping malls have started charging for carry bags. It amuses me to watch people not walking out of the shops, rather they prefer to carry their own bags to save a penny or so.

The housing complex I stay in, once faced the problem of water logging, especially during monsoons. Exchange of hot talks could always be heard between the maintenance authority and the residents, though the main reason behind the water logging was plastis bags.

Once, after a heavy shower, I made up my mind, accumulated my courage and set forth. I folded my salwar and went out in knee deep water with a stick in my hand and started clearing the mouths of the drains by collecting the plastic bags. As expected, I became a laughing stock, but I didn’t mind. The water cleared off within fifteen minutes. Next day, when it rained again, I found it easier to carry on the work and to my surprise, I found a small girl with a smiling face asking me, ‘Aunty, can I help you?’ She had a paper boat on her little palm. I remembered my childhood days, when we were free to play in the rain water. Once, I got drowned too, in a drain while holding the competition to jump across the over flown nallah. I was worried about the child and asked her, ‘Your mom will not scold you?’ She didn’t bother to answer. We floated the paper boat together and went on with our job. To our surprise, we enjoyed the work very much. Next day, there were three more young girls and the group went on getting stronger day by day. The housing complex was free of water logging within a few days. People did not laugh or talk anymore. The self appointed cleaning society, consisting only of female members earned respect from the residents. The complex now stands neat and clean and free of mosquitoes.

Google’s project loon – Balloon powered internet access to all on earth

Google will build a ring of balloons that will fly around the globe on the stratospheric winds and will provide Internet access to the earth below.

There is no doubt that internet has changed the way of interaction and connectivity and it is one of the most innovative creation of our time. The world is a village now thanks to internet. Internet has touched each facet of life. Indeed role of internet cannot be denied to bring political revolution in various countries like Egypyt, Seria and Turkey.

But still there are places on earth where internet is not available or affordable due to many factors like terrestrial challenges, economical issues and political issues as well.

In an effort to provide internet connectivity to everybody on earth Google came out with a innovative solution that is cost effective also. Google will provide internet on earth using balloons.

Sounds weird? All great ideas are weird initially till they become reality. Google named the project as Project loon.

What is the crazy idea ?

Google will build a ring of balloons that will fly around the globe on the stratospheric winds and will provide Internet access to the earth below. Speed of the internet will be similar to today’s 3G network and using this internet can be accessed to in rural, remote and undeserved areas.

Commercial planes will not affect these internet balloons as they will fly at altitudes twice as high as commercial planes.

What are the pros and cons?

There were many challenges faced by Google to solve this problem.Controling freely freely sailing balloons at high altitude was one of those challenges. It is a difficult task to control and regulate the path of the ring of the balloons. Google will use wind power and solar power to move the balloons up and down.

There is another major challenge that Google is trying to overcome. Google is trying to set the balloons for a particular region .If someone in India trying to connect with a balloon user should connect to India specific balloons only not to US specific balloons.

Google has launched 30 balloons in New Zealand to test this functionality and soon this will be launched for testing in different countries.

If this project is successful it will surely bring a revolution in internet. It is not difficult to imagine a world where free internet will be a reality and people from each corner of the earth are connected to each other.

Facebook Home : Facebook uses Google against Google

Facebook Home will be a challenge for Google.Facebook is using Google against Google.

Facebook unveiled its much awaited and hyped phone – Facebook Home, today. Facebook Home is simply a ‘Facebook Experience’ on Mobile (read Android). Facebook just added a layer on Google’s Android Mobile OS.

It is a stack of ‘Facebook Apps’ developed by Facebook for Facebook (though Facebook saying for users) and obviously on Google.

Sounds weired ?

It is just a trailor of a magnum opus that will be released in chunks to the world. How ?

It is not a new Mobile OS by Facebook as Facebook said, “Our answer is Home. Home isn’t a phone or operating system, and it’s also more than just an app. Home is a completely new experience that lets you see the world through people, not apps.”

Google’s Strength used against Google by Facebook

With the launch of ‘Home’ Facebook has waged a war in Google’s turf  by using Google’s weapon against Google. It is yet to be seen how Google is going to tackle it. But it is sure Larry,Eric and Bin would be furious.

Instead of building a New Mobile OS and competing with a much powerful Android and iOS, Facebook decided to use them for its own benefit. Android is helpful for Google if Google services are being used on Android as this way Google can show Ads by Google. Since Facebook layer called ‘Home’ will put Android in the background and Facebook in the foreground, anyone can imagine how Facebook can use ‘Home’ to show Facebook ads. If this happens, and chances are very high that this will happen, Google may have to re-think in the long term to stall Facebook’s emergence.

Since Android is an open source project, Google is not in position to object to Facebook’s move.

Google’s two weapons – Adsense and Android are also being used by Facebook against Google. One directly and another as an inspiration.

Facebook working on its own Mobile OS ?

The big question is, why did Facebook choose Google’s Android for its’ foray on mobile?

There are rumours doing the round that Facebook is working on it’s Mobile OS based on Android.Facebook Home seems to be a glimpse of that endeavour to the world. In technical terms, it may be just a test to gauge the reaction of people before launching the final product.

Facebook said,  “We designed Home to be the next version of Facebook. But we also wanted to do something more.” What is this ‘something more ‘ is yet to be seen.Future is going to be tumultuous  in mobile arena.

Facebook Home will be free to use and can be downloaded from the Google Play Store starting April 12.Intially it will be available in the US but later on it will be rolled out in other countries.

Facebook Home can be seen as a unison of Mobile and Social Media. Facebook is the king in Social Media arena but Mobile was not Facebook’s forte.Since more and more people started using Facebook on mobile, Mark Zuckerberg knew this very well that it is going to work with Android being the most popular Mobile OS.

Google introduces new rendering engine ‘Blink’ for Chromium

Google has developed a new Rendering Engine ‘Blink’ based on ‘Webkit’. Now Blink will be used for Chrome and Chrome OS replacing ‘Webkit’.

Google has developed a new Rendering Engine ‘Blink’ based on ‘Webkit’. Now Blink will be used for Chrome and Chrome OS replacing ‘Webkit’.

Rendering engine is also called browser engine and they power browsers.

Google is hopeful that this move will increase ‘collective pace of innovation’ and will provide developers an opportunity to explore “other performance improvement strategies”

Webkit was developed by Google in 2001.Due to the growing complexity of web, developer’s was facing constraints in development of Chromium and it was hampering innovation.

Due to this Webkit was no longer able to handle the growing complexity of Chromium’s multi-process architecture’.

Performance, security, innovation and speed  is the reason

Explaining the reason for change Google said “The main reason is that Chromium uses a different multi-process architecture than other WebKit-based browsers. So, over the years, supporting multiple architectures has led to increasing complexity for both the WebKit and Chromium communities, slowing down the collective pace of innovation.

In addition, this gives us an opportunity to do open-ended investigations into other performance improvement strategies. We want web applications to be as fast as possible. So for example, we want to make as many of the browser’s duties run in parallel, so we can keep the main thread free for your application code. We’ve already made significant progress here–for example by reducing the impact JavaScript and layout has on page scrolling, and making it so an increasing number of CSS animations can run at 60fps even while JavaScript is doing some heavy-lifting–but this is just the start”

Due to these reasons Google decided to spawn ‘Blink’ that will inherit its attributes from Webkit.

Google said “This was not an easy decision. We know that the introduction of a new rendering engine can have significant implications for the web. Nevertheless, we believe that having multiple rendering engines—similar to having multiple browsers—will spur innovation and over time improve the health of the entire open web ecosystem.”

Opera  will also use ‘Blink’ as a rendering engine. Blink will be an open source project like Chromium.
