India will establish a state-of-the-art gravitational wave observatory with the help of US. Union cabinet approved a proposal regarding this. Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) in the U.S will provide support in this endeavor.

This is a great news for scientists working in the area of gravitational-wave astronomy.

Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Science and Technology (DST) will handle the project with the help of LIGO Laboratory based in US.

What is LIGO?

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) is used to study gravitational waves by scientists. It was founded in 1992 by eminent scientists from Caltech and MIT University in US and many other colleges and universities.

900 scientists and 44000 active volunteers worldwide involved in LIGO project managed by LIGO Scientific collaboration.
