United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, has asked United States of America to close down infamous and controversial Guantanamo prison camp since it is violating international laws and standards.

Hunger strike by Prisoners in Guantanamo prison camp has attracted UN Human Rights Commission’s attention. Forty inmates are on indefinite hunger strike and their health is deteriorating day by day. Despite Obama’s assurance to close down  Guantanamo prison camp US has not shown any indication to fulfill its promise.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, has asked United States of America to close down infamous and controversial Guantanamo prison camp since it is violating international laws and standards.

“We must be clear about this: the United States is in clear breach not just of its own commitments but also of international laws and standards that it is obliged to uphold,” the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said in a statement.

Guantanamo prison camp also known as G-Bay or Gitmo  is a detainment and interrogation facility of the United States military. It is  located within Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba. The facility was established in January 2002 by the Bush Administration.

Terrorists arrested in counter-terrorism operations are detained in G-Bay.

“The continuing indefinite incarceration of many of the detainees amounts to arbitrary detention and is in clear breach of international law,” Ms Pillay said in a statement on Friday.

“It severely undermines the United States’ stance that it is an upholder of human rights.

“When other countries breach these standards, the US – quite rightly – strongly criticises them for it,” she added.
